Journey overview

From high plateau to Himalayan giant

This expedition crosses two of northern Pakistan’s defining landscapes without adding an unnecessary Hunza extension. Beginning in Islamabad, it flies to Skardu, crosses Deosai National Park into Astore and Rama, then continues to Fairy Meadows for two substantial walking days beneath Nanga Parbat, 8,126 metres.

The route combines wildlife, geology, mountain culture and progressively higher activity. Travel times remain weather dependent, and the program includes realistic alternatives for domestic flights and seasonal road closures.

The journey in detail

Day 1 · Arrival in Islamabad

Altitude 540 m · Driving 30–45 min · Activity easy · Paved urban roads

Arrive at Islamabad International Airport for private transfer and hotel check-in. The remainder of the day stays deliberately flexible for rest after the international journey, followed by an evening briefing covering weather, luggage, altitude progression and the northern route.

Day 2 · Fly to Skardu

Altitude 2,228 m · Flight about 1 hr · Local driving 1–2 hrs · Activity easy

Weather permitting, fly across the Himalayan foothills toward Skardu. After arrival and rest, begin a gentle introduction with selected valley viewpoints or the Manthal Buddha Rock, a surviving reminder of the region’s Buddhist past. If the flight is cancelled, the program shifts to the agreed overland contingency.

Day 3 · Skardu and Shigar

Altitude 2,228–2,500 m · Driving 80–120 km · Walking 1–3 hrs · Activity easy–moderate

Explore Baltistan through Shigar Fort, old settlement lanes and the Amburiq Mosque, with time for the meeting of desert, river and cultivated valley landscapes. Return toward Skardu with an optional walk to Kharpocho Fort or through the Organic Village according to pace and conditions.

Day 4 · Skardu to Deosai and Astore

Altitude up to 4,114 m · Driving 7–9 hrs · Activity moderate · Rough seasonal mountain road

Climb from Skardu toward the Deosai Plateau, protected as a national park since 1993. Cross broad grasslands cut by cold streams, pausing near Bara Pani and Sheosar Lake when access allows. Continue into Astore as the plateau descends toward forested western Himalayan valleys.

Day 5 · Rama and the Astore Valley

Altitude around 2,600–3,507 m · Driving 2–4 hrs · Walking 1–3 hrs · Activity moderate

Use this day to recover from the Deosai crossing while exploring Rama’s forest, pastures and lake area. Conditions determine how far vehicles can proceed. The slower pace supports acclimatisation and provides wide views toward Nanga Parbat’s eastern mass.

Day 6 · Astore to Fairy Meadows

Altitude 3,300 m · Driving 4–6 hrs · Jeep 1.5–2.5 hrs · Hiking 2–3 hrs · Activity moderate

Drive toward Raikot Bridge, transfer to locally operated four-wheel-drive vehicles for the narrow track to Tattu, then walk steadily through forest to Fairy Meadows. Pack light for the approach. Arrival before dark is important, leaving time to settle into mountain cottages and watch evening light reach Nanga Parbat.

Day 7 · Beyal Camp and Nanga Parbat Viewpoint

Altitude approx. 3,500–3,700 m · Hiking 4–6 hrs return · Activity moderate · Forest and mountain trail

Follow the trail through pine forest and open pasture toward Beyal Camp. Stronger walkers continue toward the north-face viewpoint while others can enjoy Beyal at an unhurried pace. The day is planned around group fitness, weather and safe turnaround time rather than a fixed race to the furthest point.

Day 8 · Nanga Parbat Base Camp option

Altitude approx. 3,967 m · Hiking 7–10 hrs return · Activity challenging · Rocky alpine trail

A demanding optional day continues beyond Beyal toward the base-camp area beneath the mountain’s vast north face. Recent fitness, trail conditions and weather guide the final decision. Travellers not taking the full route have a slower photography and nature day around Fairy Meadows and Beyal.

Day 9 · Fairy Meadows to Gilgit

Altitude 1,500 m · Hiking 1.5–2.5 hrs · Jeep 1.5–2.5 hrs · Driving 2–3 hrs · Activity moderate

Descend to Tattu, return by four-wheel drive to Raikot Bridge and continue along the Karakoram Highway to Gilgit. The changing landscape reveals the dramatic drop from alpine forest to the arid Indus and Gilgit river valleys.

Day 10 · Gilgit and Kargah Buddha

Altitude 1,500 m · Driving 1–2 hrs · Walking light · Activity easy

A recovery day explores Gilgit and the Kargah Buddha, a rock carving associated with the region’s Buddhist era. Time in the bazaar and riverside surroundings adds context to Gilgit’s long role as a meeting point between Central and South Asian mountain corridors.

Day 11 · Gilgit to Islamabad and Taxila

Altitude 540 m · Flight about 1 hr or full-day road contingency · Activity easy–moderate

Take the weather-dependent flight to Islamabad. When timing permits, visit Taxila’s museum and selected archaeological sites representing the Gandharan period. If the flight is cancelled, travel overland and move the cultural visit according to arrival time.

Day 12 · Departure from Islamabad

Altitude 540 m · Airport transfer 30–45 min · Activity easy

Private transfer to Islamabad International Airport. Because northern flights and mountain roads remain weather sensitive, international travellers are strongly advised to keep an additional buffer night in Islamabad whenever their wider schedule allows.

Season and contingency: Deosai is normally crossed only when the plateau road is open, generally in summer. Skardu and Gilgit flights are weather dependent. Road alternatives may operate through Babusar Pass when open or through the Indus corridor via Bisham; exact times vary with conditions and should not be treated as fixed.
