Indus civilisation and the heritage of Sindh
Following civilisation and belief along the Indus.
EP-005 connects Pakistan’s largest coastal city with the monumental necropolis of Makli, Sindh’s craft and Sufi centres, Ranikot’s vast fortifications, the Bronze Age city of Mohenjo-daro and the river heritage of Sukkur and Rohri.
The route is cultural rather than physically demanding. Private transport supports longer sectors, while walking concentrates on archaeological sites, old quarters, shrines, museums and riverfront landscapes.

The journey in detail
Day 1 · Arrival in Karachi
Meet your representative and transfer privately to the hotel. After rest, receive a briefing on Sindh’s route, climate, religious etiquette, photography and the longer road sectors ahead.
Day 2 · Karachi: city, heritage and coast
Explore selected landmarks such as Mazar-e-Quaid, Frere Hall, Mohatta Palace or the National Museum according to opening days, followed by an introduction to Karachi’s historic commercial districts and Arabian Sea setting. Frere Hall was completed in 1865, while Mazar-e-Quaid commemorates Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Day 3 · Karachi to Thatta, Makli and Hyderabad
Leave Karachi for the carved funerary monuments of Chaukhandi before continuing to Makli and Thatta. Makli contains an extraordinary concentration of tombs and monuments created over roughly four centuries. Visit Shah Jahan Mosque, completed in the seventeenth century and celebrated for its tilework and acoustics, then continue to Hyderabad.
UNESCO status: the Historical Monuments at Makli, Thatta were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 1981. Shah Jahan Mosque and Chaukhandi are important heritage sites but are not part of that inscription.
Day 4 · Hyderabad, Hala, Bhit Shah and Sehwan
Travel through central Sindh with stops selected around craft traditions and access. At Bhit Shah, visit the shrine associated with Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, the great Sindhi poet who died in 1752. Continue to Sehwan and the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, who died in 1274, experienced as an active devotional centre rather than a static monument.
Day 5 · Sehwan to Ranikot and Larkana
Continue toward Ranikot Fort when road and access conditions permit. Its long defensive walls cross a rugged landscape on the edge of the Kirthar range. After an exterior exploration and selected viewpoints, continue north to Larkana for a two-night stay.
Heritage status: Ranikot Fort is on Pakistan’s UNESCO Tentative List; it is not an inscribed World Heritage property. The visit is conditional because approach roads and site access can change.
Day 6 · Mohenjo-daro
Dedicate the day to Mohenjo-daro and its museum. The city flourished during the mature Indus civilisation, broadly between about 2600 and 1900 BCE, and demonstrates sophisticated planning, drainage and baked-brick construction. Time on site is paced around heat and conservation requirements.
UNESCO status: the Archaeological Ruins at Moenjodaro were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property in 1980.
Day 7 · Larkana to Kot Diji and Sukkur
Travel toward Khairpur and visit Kot Diji Fort, built by the Talpur rulers in the late eighteenth century, together with selected local heritage stops according to time. Continue to Sukkur beside the Indus.
Day 8 · Sukkur, Rohri and the Indus
Explore Sukkur and Rohri through bridges, river viewpoints, bazaars and sacred landscapes. A visit toward Sadh Belo is included only when access, permissions and safe river conditions allow. The day focuses on how trade, migration, religion and settlement have been shaped by the Indus.
Day 9 · Departure from Sukkur
Private transfer to Sukkur airport for the onward flight. Domestic airfare is not included, but booking assistance is available. A road extension or return to Karachi can be quoted separately.
Season and operations: November to March offers the most comfortable temperatures. Shrine access, photography, Ranikot roads, river conditions and individual monuments may change without notice. The guide adjusts sequencing while retaining the journey’s core archaeology, Sufi heritage and lower-Indus narrative.
