Across the ancient heartland of Gandhara
This carefully paced journey follows the historical corridor from Islamabad and Taxila to Peshawar, Takht-i-Bahi and the Swat Valley. Archaeological sites and museum collections explain how Buddhist ideas and imagery travelled across ancient Asia.
The route connects architecture, sculpture, trade routes and living communities. Museum schedules and access conditions are checked before operation.
The journey in detail
Day 1 · Arrival in Islamabad
Meet the Experience Pakistan team at Islamabad International Airport and transfer privately to the hotel. After time to rest, receive an introduction to Gandhara as a meeting point of South Asian, Central Asian and Hellenistic artistic traditions, together with practical guidance for the journey.
Day 2 · Taxila: cities, monasteries and stupas
Begin at Taxila Museum, then trace the urban plan at Sirkap before exploring Jaulian and Mohra Moradu. At Dharmarajika, examine the great stupa and surrounding chapels. Read the UNESCO World Heritage description of Taxila.
Day 3 · Islamabad to Peshawar
Travel west through the historic corridor linking the Punjab plains with the Peshawar Valley. After check-in, explore the old city, traditional bazaars and Qissa Khwani, introducing Peshawar’s role as a crossroads of merchants, pilgrims and ideas.
Day 4 · Peshawar Museum and the old city
Visit Peshawar Museum for its important Gandharan sculpture collection, including narrative panels that reveal the visual language of Buddhist art. Continue through the historic centre for architecture, craft streets and local cuisine.
Day 5 · Peshawar to Swat via Takht-i-Bahi
Explore the hilltop monastic complex of Takht-i-Bahi and neighbouring Sahr-i-Bahlol, then continue through Malakand Pass into Swat. See UNESCO’s official heritage listing.
Day 6 · Buddhist heritage of Swat
Begin at Swat Museum, then continue to Butkara Stupa and the monumental Shingardar Stupa. Subject to time and access, add Udegram or another nearby archaeological site.
Day 7 · Swat to Islamabad
Leave Swat after breakfast and return to Islamabad, pausing for photographs and refreshments. The afternoon remains flexible for rest or a brief capital orientation.
Day 8 · Departure from Islamabad
Transfer privately to Islamabad International Airport. Guests extending their stay can connect this experience with Lahore, the Karakoram Highway or another Experience Pakistan journey.

Access: Museum hours and archaeological-site access can change; final sequencing is confirmed close to departure.
Walking: Expect uneven stone, steps and exposed archaeological ground. Comfortable footwear and sun protection are recommended.
