Trek overview

The recognized Rakaposhi Base Camp at Taghafari.

The route follows Minapin to Hapakun and Taghafari above the Minapin Glacier. It reaches the main recognized Rakaposhi Base Camp area at approximately 3,500–3,550 metres, with views toward Rakaposhi, Diran Peak and surrounding icefalls.

The trek uses established campsites and local support. Trails include steep earthen sections, forest, meadow, rock and glacial-moraine terrain; no technical climbing is planned.

The trek in detail

Day 1 · Arrival in Islamabad

540 m · Transfer 30–45 min · Activity easy

Arrival transfer, rest and a briefing covering equipment, porter loads, weather, altitude, insurance and flight contingencies.

Day 2 · Fly to Gilgit and continue to Minapin

Minapin approx. 2,000 m · Flight about 1 hr · Road 2–3 hrs

Take the weather-dependent flight to Gilgit, then drive along the Karakoram Highway into Nagar and Minapin. If the flight is cancelled, the program switches to the overland contingency.

Day 3 · Minapin to Hapakun

6–8 km · Walking 4–6 hrs · Gain approx. 850 m · Steep forest and meadow trail

Climb from cultivated terraces through orchards and juniper or pine forest to the established Hapakun campsite at approximately 2,850–3,000 metres.

Day 4 · Hapakun to Taghafari

Walking 3–4 hrs · Highest camp approx. 3,500–3,550 m · Rocky and moraine terrain

Ascend toward Taghafari above the Minapin Glacier. The terrain becomes more open and rugged as Rakaposhi and Diran dominate the skyline. Settle into the established base-camp area.

Day 5 · Rakaposhi Base Camp exploration

Walking 3–6 hrs flexible · Activity moderate · Weather-dependent terrain

Use a full day at Taghafari for acclimatisation, glacier viewpoints and careful exploration around the base-camp area. The guide determines safe walking limits according to weather, snow, moraine and group condition.

Day 6 · Taghafari to Minapin

Walking 6–8 hrs · Descent approx. 1,500 m · Activity demanding

Descend through Hapakun to Minapin. The long descent requires steady pacing and care on steep or loose sections.

Day 7 · Minapin to Gilgit

Road 2–3 hrs · Activity easy

Return to Gilgit for recovery, equipment sorting and the final northern overnight.

Day 8 · Gilgit to Islamabad and Taxila

Flight about 1 hr · Taxila visit subject to timing

Fly to Islamabad when weather permits. Visit Taxila Museum or selected UNESCO-listed archaeological components if arrival timing allows; otherwise prioritise rest and departure preparation.

Day 9 · Islamabad departure

Airport transfer 30–45 min · Activity easy

Private transfer to Islamabad airport for the onward flight.

Fitness and safety: Participants should be comfortable walking for up to eight hours with sustained ascent and descent. Travel and medical insurance covering trekking and emergency evacuation is required. The guide may shorten or alter the route because of weather, trail, glacier or group conditions.
